how can I link text boxes on my Master pages when I am creating a new document

If you mean boxes that will continue from one page to the next, then select Automatic Text Box in the New Document dialog box. Set the page margins to the size you want the text box to be, and if you want multiple columns, you can specify them here too. The default master page for this document can now be altered to suit your needs, and any text that won't fit on page 1 will flow to page 2, creating a new page based on your master page if necessary.

If you mean linking several text boxes on one master page, well this can be done just the same way as linking text boxes in your document, with the link tool. If you can't get it to work, fill the first text box with dummy text until it overflows, then try linking. Just don't try linking from one box to one that already has text in it.

Hope this helps...

I tried your first option when I created a new document. I selected text box, but I didn't see anything called "automatic". I placed several pages in my document, but the flowing of text didn't seem to work.

Do you have to link you master pages once you get into your quark file?

thanks for the help!

The Automatic Text Box option is only in the New Document dialog box itself. Once you click OK there's no going back to it!

I don't have XPress on this computer, so I'm working from memory, but if you look at the New dialog box, there's two columns.

The first lets you specify the size of the document and the number of columns you want (normally this only draws margin guides, but with automatic text boxes, it will also split the text box up into columns).

The second sets the outer margins for the document (which also sets the position for your text box), and underneath it you will see (I think!) 2 check boxes: one for facing pages, and the other for Automatic Text Box. That's the one you want!

Incidently, in all the years I've been using QuarkXPress, I haven't found another way to link text boxes across master pages, even facing master pages. Kinda makes sense, because if you only use one master page, where would the link go? Still, if anyone can think of a way, I'd love to here it!

Now it works!! Not sure why it didn't work before. Maybe I didn't select automatic text box and facing pages.

Anyway, Thanks for the help!!!!
