Linking Parameters to Subreport

I want to pass Parameters from a main report into 3 subreports. I have read previous posts about this.

I prefer to link to the subreport Parameters rather than using "Select data in subreport based on field". One reason is I dont see how this can do date greater-than.

Heres the problem ..

When I "Edit - Subreport Links" and select the parameter in the main report, and move to to "fields to link" (">"),
.. my subreports parameter does NOT appear in "subreport parameter field to use"; the only option there is the generated parameter name "?Pm-?p_startdate".

I tried ticking and not ticking "Select data in subreport based on field". I have checked that the datatypes are the same, even created String parameters (main and sub) in case Dates had extra subtleties, but I cannot get ANY existing subreport parameters to in "subreport parameter".

My subreports were Included from an existing report, rather than created purely inside the main - could that be it ? I dont want to rewrite them, they have LOTs of table links.

Also (less important) the main report has no data of its own, and that seems to disable "Refresh" - so how do I invoke a refresh to prompt for my parameters ? I suppose I could include a dummy database reference.

Any ideas on why I cannot link to my subreport parameters ?
