I *know* this can be done with a subreport somehow, but I just can't get it to work.

I have a field in the format yyyy/xxxx/yyyyy where xxxx is a four digit number. I'm extracting this to a formula named {@CostCentre}.

How can I link {@CostCentre} to an entry another table where it exists on its own? However I achieve it, I need to group by it.

Yes, you can do this using a linked subreport.

What exactly can't you get to work?

What link options did you specify for the subreport?

You cannot link a formula field to a database field, you must create a subreport to do this. Software Training and Support for Macola, Crystal Reports and Goldmine

I've created a main report which just includes the table I need to link to.

Then I embedded the subreport which contains the formula into the report footer. I set the links with MainReport.{CostCentreCode} to Subreport.{@CostCentre} and MainReport.{AccountNumber} to Subreport.{AccountNumber}

Running the report returns no results whatever. The subreport has a number of parameter fields to select {AccountNumber} and a range of dates.

Do I need to make the selections happen at the main report level rather than the subreport?

Not sure I can explain this any better! Perhaps I have a long, hot weekend ahead of me...

Did you place any fields from the main report table on the main report layout?

Are you saying even the main report is blank?
In other words, please clarify what you mean by
"returns no results".

Cheers,

Sorted it. Went the other way round - left the main report as it was and embedded a subreport in a suppressed second group header which provided the shared variable I needed.

Thanks for your advice. Ever get the feeling you've spent so long looking at something you can't see it any more?
