I have a consolidation spreadsheet where I want to do a COUNTIF function of items on other spreadsheets. I end up getting a #VALUE error when I do this. If I open the other spreadsheets the formula works fine. Why is this and how can I correct it?
Thanks,
jnix

Hi jnix,
Does your COUNTIF formula contain the entire path, as well as the cell reference, for the other spreadsheet, for instance:

=COUNTIF('C:\Documents and Settings\John Smith\My Documents\End User Training Material\Excel\Practice Files\2002\[test for Countif.xls]PMT'!$A$11:$E$27,"west")

I tried this and it works for me - I use Office XP.
Good luc,

Tried this again and got your error message. But when prompted to Update LInks upon opening the destination workbook, I clicked "do not update". Then I made changes to the source workbook, and the destination workbook updated anyway. Maybe you could try that instead.
Best,
BlueHorizon
