Linked OLE objects dramatically increase file size-why?

I have an Access 2000 database with a field created for a bitmap image associated with each record. I set the field type as an OLE object and I linked the images by choosing insert object, create from file, checking the box for link, and browsing for the file location. However, each time I add a link, the database size increases by the size of the bitmap image. The reason why I chose the link option was to decrease the size of the database. Is there another way to accomplish this task or did I set it up incorrectly.
