My question regards security. There are two hard drives on a pentium 4 based computer with Windows Me. Both drives contain sensitive data. The second hard drive is a slave and contains archived data. I utilize Norton Personal Firewall and obtain internet access through an ethernet card via cable modem.

I would like to file share over the internet. BUT, I do not want anyone to have access to my hard drives. I intend on downloading all information onto a Zip drive.

The firewall software is not capable of unlimited access to the Zip drive exclusively. Essentially, the firewall will limit access to specific sites or zones. But it is not capable of limiting access to certain system locations. I have not been able to locate any software that would accomplish this task. I'm told that a router with built in firewall would work. But, I know of no one who has actually attempted to do this.

Is it possible to limit file sharing to the Zip Drive?
If so, how can this be done?

Thanks in advance, Bob.

Sure, you just need to upgrade your operating system to something more secure like Windows 2000 or XP. Keep your files on the hard drive and not the zip. This will allow you to share out drives and give file access by using share permissions and file permissions. There are cable and dsl routers that give limited firewall capabilities but the thing is, if you don't have a valid or real internet IP and your being natted, you will not be able to get to your hard drive anyway to access anything as the nat will stop you. I don't know of a low end cable/dsl router that will allow you to map a one to one address to your interior box, only high end routers normally have this capability. If you share out your zip drive you are limited to share permissions only and on Windows ME, that means everyone has access. Would an operating system upgrade be an alternative for you?
