I have a server that has 35,000+ files (.tif's)in the root, plus other folders. The main folder resides on a raid5 hardware array.

When you connect to the drive via a UNC connection or a mapped drive, the share is slow to open....maybe 15-20 seconds. Is that normal behavior and is it because of the number of files in the root?

My network is Gbit and connecting to other servers or other shares on this same server are not slow to open.

Also, when you do get one of the files open and try to print, it takes about 4 min for the initial print dialog box to appear. This is on XP sp2 machines only!! W2k pro clients are fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!

bentley45, is your server on a deframentation schedule? I would perform an analysis on all partitions and verify it's not fragmented.

I use Diskeeper on all my servers on a scheduled basis. Works quite well. File servers surely need this on a regular basis. Just a thought...

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Thanks, it does recommend a defrag. I'll give that a try.
