I have a car dealership that has two buildings. the ksu is in the main building and the truck center is in another about 1000' apart fed by underground 50 pr ca. Whenever there is a storm, i lose some sets. The lightning is not a direct hit, it could be very far away.the truck center sets very close to high tension power lines. The showroom has glass windows all around the front.Any idea how to protect these sets from damage?

Nothing going to help you unless you can get 2 pieces of fiber through to the far side

thanks for the response. fiber is not going to happen here but I agree it would be the best. also the 50 pr ca is protected at both ends and grounded. Im not losing the sets at the KSU, just at their desks where they sit.

It's the station wireing at the truck ctr, you can try to get protection at the jack side.

You're probably suffering the effects of induced voltage.
I would check the cable sheath bond at each end to ensure it's still viable and grounded. Electrical ground, water line, phone protector ground and ground rod should all be bonded together to ensure no potential between any two.
From experience in broadcasting, I found that any resistance that is measurable by meter is too much resistance. Even 1 ohm impedance getting in the way of a million volts can make bad things happen.
As far as direct strikes go, The arc just jumped a two-mile air gap. A quarter inch of anything isn't going to stop it.

had a dealership with the same problem, even thought the 50 pair was well grounded, we would lose the odd set on a strong storm. Installed the Panamax DS25 (make sure it's the one for digital sets) once installed, knock on wood, we have not lost a set in 4 years. This product is an in and out, bring your 50 pair to the in side, 110 punch down and then from the out cross connected to the jack off your bix.
