Maybe someone can point me to a good web refrence or explain this to me. MS licensing has be really confused, I can't seem to find a place on MS.com that really goes over it step by step.

Lets say I have 2 windows 2003 servers, on is a file server and the other is a print server.

The file server was purchased with 20 per server CALS and the print server was purchased with 10 per server CALS for example. Lets say the fileserver is the one running LSASRV

There are two places to add lisences, under Control Panel/Lisencing, or in Administrative Tools. What is the difference between the two? When I get my new server running, where do I apply the CALS? I must sound like such an idiot, but I don't get it.

Are all the CALS actually not for a specific machine, but it just grabs from a pool?

I have been wondering the same thing with my 2 w2k3 servers.

Seriously, I've found billions of explanations on what the different types of CALS are and what they do, ect, but I have idea how to properly apply them. I honestly don't consider myself to be stupid in any way lol, but I just can't find anything that really lays it all out.

In 2003, the license logging service is disabled. It isnt recommended that you turn it back on and try to manage licenses through the GUI.

Having the LLS disabled will allow unlimited connections. However, you still need to have the correct amount of licenses to remain compliant.

The only thing that matters with licensing is your documentation. If you were ever audited, the auditor is not going to look at the licensing GUI. They will be looking at the black and white, physical proof of your licenses.

Oh. Well that would make sense as to why I can't seem to find documentation.

Was this the case for Windows 2000 server as well? How did that work?

It wasnt disabled by default in 2000, but it was very buggy so it was recommended that it be disabled.

Wow, ok.

This just makes life WAY easier, as long as I have all my paper documents together, which I already do, I'm good to go.

Thank you for enlightening me.
