If I look in Windows Licensing, I show many more clients then we really have. I deleted all of the clients that are no longer w/ the company however, the list show a lot of duplication.

Examples are \username and \DOMAIN\username. The \username instances show no accesses and the \DOMAIN username show all of the times that a client accessed a resource. My question is can I revoke the \username instances? Will this effect anything? Why are they there? They have not been used in over three months.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

As long as you have enough CAL's to cover the number of connections that are actually made, then you're fine. The Licensing Manager is a major pain in the butt and is really only there to "help" Administrators.

I've heard in 2003 Server they actually disable the service, so go figure, MS doesn't even like it.

Yes it is disabled by default in 2003, and it is recommended that you disable it in 2000.

Any audit that might be done will look at your license documentation. They will never look at the license manager GUI.

Thanks for your input guys. How do I disable the licensing service??? Also, if I leave it running, do you think if I remove the \username instances it will be a problem?

Open up your services snap-in and stop the Licensing Service, then set it to Manual.

You're not going to affect anything with what you do in the License Manager.
