Been having some licensing problems with our Windows 2000 ADV. Server. In the event viewer it shows that we are out of licenses. I go to Admin tools and click on Licensing. Then click on the “Product View” tab, and it shows the Product as “Windows Server” and is over the limit of what we have. When I double click on “Windows Server” it then takes me to the properties view of “Windows Server”. This shows me all of the users, the last date used, and number of access. This is what is setting us over the limit.

As all companies/businesses, employees leave, when they do we delete the user name under the Active Directory, and save the data folder for that user, BUT never log into as that user that left. What keep coming up are users that have been gone for over 2 years, this user keeps popping back up as a user, and it’s not just one, it’s all who have been deleted. For example we have 185 licenses and as 5 users leave the user is deleted, we get 5 new users to replace them, but the old 5 users pop back in under the licensing and then puts us over to 190 licenses…..Please help

Problem with License Manager
I have followed the instructions in Q153140 and Q194065 on how to reset License Manager information. Two days later, I am getting warnings in my Event Logs that my Windows Server is out of licenses. Its finding ghost users that have been deleted from my system for 3-4 years How do I really delete their licenses and make them stop coming back?

A: Many people have reported the same problem. You may want to disable the License Manager and manage the licenses manually.

James,

I was having the exact same problem as you - users who had left ages ago suddenly popping up in the Licence viewer.

Do not worry, there is a solution which I eventually found on the MS site. Here is what I do every 6 mths or so:

1. Stop the License Logging service.
2. Delete or rename the following on the servers in your domain:

Cpl.cfg
Llsuer.lls
Llsmap.lls
(these can be found in in the %systemroot%\System32 and %systemroot%\system32\LLS)

3. Restart the license Logging service.
4. Re-add the appropriate license information on your DC.

Full details are in Q185953.

Please note that all 3 files will be on you DC whilst only the LLS\Llsuser.lls file will be found on your other servers. I found that you MUST delete the Llsuser.lls on all your servers to remove old users.

Your Licence files will be reset and as your current users logon you should only see them and not ones which left ages ago.

Andy.

Thanks Donkey1
I even printed it out to save when I need to clean my licenses.

You saved me from looking it up.

Star to you
