Hello all,

I've recently had to re-format and re-install a computer, due to hardware changes - however, this isn't the first time that such a thing has been done (previously it had been formatted for numerous reasons) and now on boot up it produces a screen saying that it's having problems validating the license - which is a new one on me... It worked fine until I activated it over the internet yesterday.

And ideas?

Sorry to poast twice - but this is on a computer not near me, so I'm trying to get the full data, apparently it says:

A problem is preventing windows for accurately checking the license of this computer.

Error code: 0X80040017

Apparently this occurs while trying to log onto someones profile, is says "activating your settings" and then this message pops up.

Any ideas?

Just call Microsoft, the toll free number, they will help you out since you have a valid license and use.

I thought you had to pay for support from Microsoft?

XP activated correctly origninally, but on re-start this morning it won't log in as the above error occurs

I would hope that activation is not a subject for paid support ! You did pay for it, and it is MS that imposes activation before being able to use it. If anything goes wrong with that part, they had pretty darn well give support for it.

Pascal.

PS: you do not have to pay to get re-activated, if it would ever occur.
