We are looking into purchasing Microsoft Windows 2000 Small Business Server. Reason behind is all the packaged applications that comes with the software. Only confusion I have with Microsoft on this issue is the Licensing aspect. There is a hard coded 50 Client Limit in the software. According to Microsofts documentation they state in one section that it is limited to 50 workstations, and then on another section is states 50 clients or devices. My confusion is that devices would include modems/printers/faxboards/etc. that are attached to the server in some way or another.

Anyone out there use SBS and if so how do I determine how many CAL packs I need? I have 40 computers and about 10 or so printers.

Nope, I wouldn't worry about the 'devices' clause. Only systems that can actually initiate a connection to a server need a client license. I don't think most printers carry a workstation-style redirector and can't see them taking a license. I would think that you should be fine with your 40 clients.
