I am tring to understand Microsoft Client Access license, but I am so confused with the words they use.

1. Does using Active Dictory Require a CAL to use?
2. What services require the use of a CAL?
3. If we have 5 servers and 50 cleints how many CALS do I need under per seat?
4. Does Wins need a CAL for clients to register with.

I dont see a list of services that microsoft says need a CAL. All I see is access or authenticate server service.

Please help. Project that ness completed.

The way that I understand things you have two CAL options: user CALs or device CALs. If you have users on multiple machines or PDAs go with user; if you have shared machines and lots of users go with devices; I've not tried but mixing the two can be very hard. Here we have about 29 users but 40 some odd computers that access our system, i'm running User CALs.

I think you can get by doing your DHCP, DNS, WINS, etc without using CALs but any services that are going to require authentication; for anything that needs to access the server for anything authentication wise, logging on, file sharing, printing, etc, you will chew up a license.
