I have a laptop at the office which started typing incorrect characters, after a format and reload I found that it is the Num Lock causing the problem.

There is no BIOS setting and the registry keyboard value is set to 0.

Does anyone know where else I can turn off the num lock at boot?

Does the laptop have any OEM software installed that may be triggering it? Oftentimes, OEM software is included in laptops to make it "easier" to customize such things.

Also, you could check around to see if anyone has mentioned a way to get into "advanced" BIOS settings. I've not seen this often, but on at least one desktop motherboard of mine - not OEM - If I hit <Shift> and <Del> instead of just <Del>... or maybe it was a certain key combo while in the BIOS - I could access much more "dangerous" but possibly helpful options, specifically for overclocking. However, I'd imagine a manufacturer could just as well hide those things it thought "advanced" for most users, but not necessarily all, and give a shortcut for accessing those.

Not saying that's the case, but it's worth checking.
