We recently started creating an offsite backup once a week (a full backup). This is a scheduled job that uses a different pool (Offsite) from our regular daily incremental backup pool (Onsite). I had thought that because the jobs used different pools they would run independent of each other (ie: I would never need to use the offsite backup pool for a restore unless the onsite pool was damaged). This doesn't seem to be the case. The incremental onsite backup is only backing-up files that were changed since the last backup (regardless what pool it's in). So, if I need to restore a file from 2 weeks ago, Legato asks me for a tape from the Offsite pool when it should only be asking me for tapes from the Onsite pool.
Our Offsite full backup runs 1/week while our Onsite full
backup runs 1/month.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks,

Jesse

don't you make full backups weekly? (onsite I meant) that's not a good idea.

you could clone the weekly full backup and put the clone off-site. if you need to restore something NW will ask you for the last full backup *always!* no matter the pool while some tape has the needed file.

Actually, i do not completely understand your problem as you talk about an Onsite pool for incrementals and an Onsite full pool.

Never mind - NW should only ask you for the tape where the file has been stored on - if it has not changed since the last full, it will of course only reside on that media and therefore you must keep such media onsite as well.

Cloning would prevent missing media in case you need it.
