If I have a layer 3 switch and/or router in my network, is there any reason to use a trunk to my server and make the nic part of each vlan? I have read a bit about it, but I'm not sure the significance - other than if you are not doing any inter-vlan routing. Am I correct in my assumptions? Thanks

Off the top of my head, I think you would only do that if:

a) you were using the server as a "router"
or
b) you wanted clients to talk to the server, but not each other (i.e. no routing on the server).
