lay-out changes in word when opening document

When I open an old word.doc it happens sometimes the lay-out changes and nothing is no more readable. I see symbols over all my page, but at page two it is better, I can read my document but my lay-out has changed. On all the machines is installed win2k with 0service pack 3 and I've checked the language, it is Belgium-Netherlands (which is correct because I live in Belgium.) If someone can give me some suggestions, I will be glad to hear them out!

Hi Johanne,

In the File Open box check that the "Files of Type" line does NOT say "Recover Text from Any File (*.*)" - this gives the problems you have indicated.
