LaserJet9500hdn burning paper?

I am having a problem with a HP LaserJet 9500hdn.

The problem is this:

When we run a large print job (100 copies, 6 pages, dual sided,) on HP soft gloss 11x17 24lb paper. It looks like it “burns” the edges on the last end of the job.

This is really odd to describe, but 4-7 pages before it pauses to recalibrate itself, it produces prints that have a lemonade color at the top and bottom, and then each one gets progressively darker until it looks like a dark cinnamon. Then after the recalibration it looks fine until the last 4 -7 pages again.

What is also of some interest is that when we run normal 11x17 28lb and 20lb paper it looks fine no matter how long we print.

So my hypothesis is:

The softgloss is burning somehow when the printer is getting hot. Could the discoloration at the top and bottom be burn marks? Or the gloss coating melting possibly?

Can anyone point me in the right direction other then HP support, they are just shipping me random toners and drums all the time.

Thanks in Advance!

Ok, got a question. Have you verified that the paper you are using is for Laser Printers? I know there are many kinds of paper that are marked as "Inkjet" paper.

The problem may be that the paper cannot handle the heat from the fuser. I don't know specific fuser temp on the 9500 series, but in typical HP printers, the fuser can reach close to 400 F.

You need to verifiy and make sure any paper you are using can withstand that kind of heat, or you risk a fire hazard.

I just looked at the ream and its labeled as
"HP soft gloss laser paper"
in the hp font on the front. so I would assume it works with all HP brand laser printers.

Hi!

Seems like you have to change the fuser temerature. You can do this using the front panel. Go to Menu - Configure Device - Fuser modes and set the papertype that you are using to a low fuser mode.

Also check tray/papersetting so that at least the papertype is correct.

You may also have a bad temperature sensor on your fuser.

Just my $0.02

I have just went though the menu maps, and everything I could and there is no where to set fuser modes.

I have changed the paper types on the trays to represent what they are glossy and semi-gloss and still it keep happening.

Its firmware datecode is : 20050518 05.007.1 (if that helps with menus)

Thanks for the ideas and help!

I took a multimeter and plugged it into a free outlet on the surge protector that the printer was plugged in. I noticed when the printer was working that it made the normal voltage at 122v drop to 116v and then fluxuate between 116.8 – 122.2v

When I plugged it into a wall outlet, I plugged my multimeter in the outlet directly above where the printer was plugged in. (same face plate) and noticed that during the same print operations that it made the voltage drop to 113v when normal voltage is 122.2v

That's pretty normal, the heaters in a LJ really draw some current (which causes the voltage to sag). It's usually not a problem unless the voltage dips below around 108v.

You are running large print jobs, and duplexing. The paper is still hot from the first pass, and the soft gloss paper is not ideal for 2-sided printing. You may have a large stock of this paper, and it may not be kept right. Remove paper away from direct light, sun, heat, etc. Keep away from A\C and heater vents. The printer itself may be in a bad position, and the paper could be getting moisture.
The fuser has been working hard, and may be hot enough to burn any media you use. That's what print shops are for.

600 dual sided is not that big of a job. I've got several 5550's that run jobs that size regularly with no problems.

Well as far as the paper goes We keep it in a locked steel cabinet. at 74 bucks a ream management has put some serious locks on it and its use (no more posters! a Its on the north wall of the building that has no windows, and is in a large open banquet style room 90 x 300. It stands on its own 20amp circuit with over one foot of open air around it. 2 feet to the left of it is a table with an HP4050 and 4500 (on a seperate 20amp circuit). The cabinet is 2 or 3 feet to the right of it. it stands 1 foot away from the north wall.

10 feet away from the printer is where cubeville starts, but all the cubes are on a different sets of circuits.

Well Hp told me they are having problems with the toners with the system and that they cannot get any toner carts that will work for me. There are none on the planet. Wow!

Well now we have to break our lease and get something different, I am glad HP is working with us on getting this returned since it will not function.

Thanks all,

Well More and more problems abound. The stapler in the finisher died. Seriously it gave a warning that it was running low on staples, then it said it was out. There is still about 50-70 staples left in the cartridge. Also it smells like there is a burning smell coming from the finisher.

I have called the HP engineer again who told me that he would supply the data we need to break the lease since the printer is unusable in its current state, and now he says they have new toners to try and wants to ship them to me AGAIN!!

This will be the 5th set of toners that SHOULD have worked!

Now he says that he will have to have HP legal supply a document to let our leasing company know that they need to send the printer back to get a refund and this could take over a week ARGH!!!

I cant believe I am getting this kind of crap from HP, I got much better service from Dell, & Tripp Lite.

Gahh!!! People Stay away from this printer!!!!

Ahhh,,, dont sell yourself short. The reason you have had trouble is that you have dealt with HP instead of having a technician submit the claim. Sorry if you had trouble, but HP is the best way to go .
