I recently replaced the HDD on an old Gateway 2000 machine with a new 40.0GB HDD.
The BIOS for the Gateway will only recognize it as an 8.0GB HDD. I know this is a common problem, and Gateway has already told me that they won't be releasing a BIOS that will support HDD larger than 8.0GB.
But, they did tell me that there are 3rd-party programs that may be able to allow me to access the full 40.0GB.
Does anybody know of these programs?
Any info appreciated.

Normally hard drive manufacturer's have what's called drive overlay software available for this situation (so I'd try IBM/Hitatchi's website if you want this - though I've had trouble finding some stuff on there since it went Hitatchi). It can cause problems further down the line however (eg, if you move the hard drive elsewhere).

Another option is to buy a controller card (plugs in PCI slot). They're not very expensive.
