am i able to ask laptop questions here?

I have a toshiba tecra A2, its now coming up with an error saying
"windows cannot read from this disk the disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows"

i took it to toshiba centre and they said its becuase i installed nero? has anybody heard of this?, i can read dvd movies but not data, and burn cds, but can read cds until i open up explorer and click explore, so that means all auto run functions dont work, and i cant run windows cd from startup.

no good toshiba now want to charge me 50bucks to do a recovery, i tried the recovery my self but it wont read the cd!

i apolagise if this is not the forum for laptops, if it isnt could some one please direct me to that forum and i'll ask this question there.

Cheers for any help

Did you un-install Nero? This would be the first thing to do. What OS? The next thought would depend on Win 98 - 95 - or XP.

yep well nero didnt uninstall, it said

"error 1316 a network error occured while attempting to read from the file nero burning rom msi" so i downloaded the latest version of nero 5.5, installed it , then i was able to uninstall it,, the os is xp

cheers for the help

You didn't say if it was working OK now. Do you have an XP disk, or just a stupid "restore" disk?

toshiba said this was a common error with toshiba tecra A2's and the drive matshita uj811, i then asked him well nero is a popular burning software, why wasnt i atleast given a warning that installing this would lead to errors, i mean i understand they cannot say "you cannot install nero if you do it will stuff up your laptop" for certain legal implications, but atleast say you have a burning software on there (record Now, which i cant stand, i prefer nero by amile), and if you install another it may cause problems.

Forgot, Nero says to upgrade to Nero 6.0 to work with XP SP2.

its still not working after the nero install, i have xp and and revory disk, but it wont read the recovery disk, i just want to check all avenues before i reinstall xp

cheers

Well, now you know what NOT to do (Nero). Be sure to check and make sure that re-installing XP won't overwrite the drivers needed for your computer to work properly. You may be in a "catch 22", you can't use the "restore" disk - but you can't reformat and start from scratch because that will wipe out the drivers to run the CD! Go to the website and download any drivers needed for your computer. You may have to use a Win 98 emergency boot disk if you format. It has general CD drivers so you can use the CD to install XP.

So there is probably no other way around it but to format it? and reinstall xp, thats unfortunate, thanks for the help micker, its much appreciated.
