We have multiple HP 6100 Laptops, one of these failed so we had the user take the HD out of his (lap1) and place it in another, we have done this in the past for remote users. This time it did not work, so we had him swap laptops with another user (lap2). The other user was able to use place his Hd in Lap1, and use the laptop while in the office, when we sent him back his laptop (lap2) after getting it back from other user, we instructed him to swap the HD's and ship us Lap1. When he swapped HD, lap2 will not recognize the HD. It will detect it at the Bios level, but not the OS. He placed it back into lap1 it worked fine. We had an opertunity to work on both Laptops yesterday, and this is what we found.

If a HD is placed in lap2 you can use the pc, we swapped HD's between lap2 and other spare machines with no problem. But if you place a hd in lap1, it works fine on lap1, but it will not work on any other laptop. We even placed it in our HD Cloner and it would not recognize the OS or the partion. Only lap1 sees anything on these drives, everything else says that they do not contain a partion.

Can any one shed some lite on this? Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion.

We found the problem. It was in the Bios security settings. HP Hard Disk lock. Once we turned that off we can unlock all of the effected drives.

Thanks again.
