Hi All

Need some recommendations on laptops. Basically 2 of our sales guys need something they can take to presentations to show off our product which is video/3d render animation based as well as be able to link up with the lan when in the office.

We were looking at Dell inspiron 5150 with a few added extras but I was looking for a second opinion or complete recommendation, as portables arent really my forté

Any help would be great. (Am UK based)

Thanks

Well there isnt anything wrong with Dells (ive had a bad experience)
I love the sony vaios!
They are the gods of laptops IMO get a high end vaio and you are laughing

Dells are the WORST! Totally avoid Dell laptops. Their quality is questionable and the support is lousey. I'd recommend the Acer Travelmate series. Very nice units and you can get with DVD burner and S-Video out. New Egg has them as deos CDW.

I recomend sony laptops I have had very little trouble with them when they come into the shop and most of the problems I see come into the shop are gateways and HPs with monitors burned out after only a year.

Just got to add that Acer customer support is completely useless.

I had 15 Travelmates for some of the teaching staff at the school where I work. One was faulty on arrival (HD) and I rang Acer support, took almost 2 days to get through (on hold for ages and then cut off, or got bored after 1hr). Finally got through got return number then was told I had to contact their courier to arrange collection! Now three weeks later no sign of the machine, rang them again (only one call with 45 minute wait this time) was told they were waiting for part (almost three weeks and they can't het hard disk hmmm). Anyway today got mail that it was on its way back (wonder how long that woul dhave been if I hadn't chased it. And registering the 3 year warranty is a nightmare

We have some Futitsu Siemens laptops as well and if any of these have needed customer support is excellent by comparison, phone answer aftera few rings (no wait), they arrange for courier and provide package. Machines are returned after 5 days. No need to register warranty either.

Even out reseller of Acer thinks that their CS is poor too.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant but just think things should be easier than Acer make them.

I recommend Toshiba as well! I've used mine on a daily basis for hours on end for @ 3yrs with no problems.
Good luck on your decision!

Count me in for the Toshibas! They are complete work horses and will last for a long time! I wouldn't go for Dell or Acer.

I might as well cast my vote for Toshiba as well. They are rock solid.

Jim

Buy the two year extended warranty. I just heard the other day of a Toshiba laptop that died in month 13. Warranty was up. The guy paid $2800 and it lasted 13 months. My friend did not no the details.

Very happy with my Dell. It has worked 70+ hours every week over the last three years! Great range of add-ons if you shop around for the best price. Support website is simple to use. Maybe some issues with the offshore 'phone support staff - not had to use them...

Andy.

Lets stick to the subject, macten88... The subject is recommendations not slams. This is why people often avoid asking these type of question in forums. But, if you persist:
Dell Rants (April 2004):
Sony Laptops & Service (March 2004):
Please stick too the recommendations, good job for everyone else!

well thanks everyone for the recommendations

we've ended up going with the dells cos they gave the best offer. managed to get 5% off, free deliver, 2 free printers, double RAM and 3 year onsite warranty all in. not too bad.

my own experience with dell has only been desktops not notebooks but its been relatively painless so fingers crossed on the new arrivals.

thanks again everyone.
