laptop display v.bad

i was given a toshiba satellite pro (4270) from someone who left the work, ths display on it is terrible - i have to lie the screen almost parallel to the desktop before i can see anything on the screen. i phoned toshiba & they were rather unhelpful, gave me some software company number. ive played with all the configuration settings and nothings changed. would it just be better to get another screen? or is there maybe something im missing here?
