On my XP sp2 computer whenever I connect to the internet with my dsl modem 2 icons appear in my system tray. One say verizon online is connected at 100mbs and the other says that the lan has limited or no connectivity. Is this normal for a dsl connection or is there a solution for this problem?

Thanks

You can use Group Policy to remove the warning on the second icon.

But it does mean something. It suggests you have two DHCP servers on your LAN and need to adjust your settings to handle this.

Likely your Verizon DSL modem is acting as a DHCP server, and your router is as well. If you provide more details of the DSL modem/router and any other hardware equipment in use it would help.

What is your LAN setup? I have seen this message occur when the LAN Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings are wrong for the IP address if you use a Static IP Address.

Limited Connectivity

Thats the thing, I'm not on a LAN. This is a stand alone computer. The only connection im making is to the internet. For some reason it seems like the computer is looking for a LAN to connect to. I have read about it being an issue with XP and an onboard chip? Anyone know anything about that?

Thanks

Go into Device Manager and disable any unused network adapters.

When I disable the connection I cant connect to the internet. Will this cause the same thing?

If you only have one ethernet port, and this is the connection to the modem, then do not disable it.

Open network connections and see if you have a connection listed as "Internet Gateway". If so, right-click, Properties, and uncheck the box to show an icon in the notification tray.

In IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections/ LAN Settings, is there anything checked in there?
