Hi, I program but am not very good adn teh whole networking thing. I work for thsi little company that has a network set up with a router, server, printer/copier and share internet among everyone. They have a T1 or T3 line I believe. I have been trying to get a computer set up on the network to share files on fileserver, access printer and most importantly access the internet.

We have a wide range of pcs on the network, 98 thru XP. The one I'm trying to set up is a 98SE on laptop. There is a desktop here that runs 98, I mimiced the TCP/IP settings and changed the IP assigned. All other settings reamin the same such as defualt gateway. Its not going thru. Are there some setting I may be missing?

Please help

make sure you changed the IP in the right way.
(e.g. is the other machine's IP is 192.168.0.3 with subnet 255.255.255.0 you will need to use the same prefix 192.168.0 followed by a number between 1 and 254.)

make sure your IP doesn't conflict with anyone elses on the network

check you're connecting (i.e. check the link lights on both your NIC and the hub/switch it's connecting to) - also check your cable type (it probably should be a patch cable, not a crossover cable).

for more help, open a dosprompt and type "ipconfig /all" then post the results.
