My boyfriend gave me his antique laptop with Win3.1 on it .. i went into the display settings and changed them to 32 colors and something else size maybe? when i rebooted it got all the way past the windows splash then this message comes up:

Error: Video BIOS does not support this mode. Press any key to continue.

Then goes to the DOS prompt. I went into the BIOS and changed the parms there but that didn't help.

Does 3.1 have a safe mode bootup? Is there any way to fix this problem?

He's gonna kill me!

From the C:\ prompt type in setup. Then chose custom install and it should let you change the video settings back to what they were. (If my memory is correct).

Jim, if I recall, setup.exe will call DOS setup, not the windows setup.

Is it winsetup.exe to get the windows options?

Hell, I'd have to get home and turn on my WFWG 3.11 box and check, it has been quite a while since I did that. :)

Good luck!

If still looking for an answer:
while in DOS, you need to switch into c:\windows directory and run SETUP.EXE (there is also one in c:\dos - not what you need), then highlight DISPLAY line, hit ENTER and choose whatever was there before. If you are not sure, what was there before, choose VGA - this will let you at least start Windows and then you can choose settings from there.

Good luck.
