KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

My computer became to be very wierd in the last fiew days:
I upgraded my HD from 10G to 40G and I noticed that the CPU is almost 100% used even in Idle operation (described in another thread).
After that my CD-R/RW stoped working. It was recognised in the BIOS and in the task manager but when I try to enter into it I've got a massage that the device is not connected.
And now I have one more problem: when I serch for new hardware I get the following messages for a very short time and then the computer restarts itself:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED heading with STOP and some addresses.
My OS is Win2K and I use ASUS P4B266 with Intel's 1.6G P4 (100MHz external bus),and 256MB of RDRAM.
My CD-R/RW is Yamaha's CRW8424E
I'm trying to format my HD but I want to make some backups before so I must operate my CD-R/RW.

Get an 80-pin IDE cable for the Drive.
Make certain the CD-Rom is on the secondary IDE chain, and not on the same chain as the hard disk drive.

Then check under Device Manager the IDE primary controller to make certain it is running DMA 5 mode.

It would be a substantial benefit for you to download Intel's Application Accelerator for your machine from Intel's web site. This upgrades the drivers for Intel's support circuitry for the P4, and especially deals with DMA issues for the IDE chain.

It has nothing to do with your IDE cable.

The kmode exception means only that the operating system was using its 32-bit kernal when the error occured, and no exception handler was available for the thread.

The Microsoft article Murray references identifies new hardware as the first thing to look at for identification of the source of the problem.

A Google search on "nt kmode_exception" yields a laundry list of things that can cause the exception, far broader than Murray's list. From the virus reference of Murray to the installation of Nero Burning Rom, Quickbooks, USB mice and removing folders under Windows Explorer.

When I see 100% CPU utilization, missing drive letters, and unhandled exception errors from the kernel after a new ATA133-based drive placed in service it is strongly indicative that the drive is at fault, not the video drivers or a virus.

Hi,
first of all i want to thank all of you who helped me through this despairing problem.
Finaly my computer works as it supposed to be.
I formatted my HD and Installed all my programs again.
I think that SESaskDFC was right and a virus was eating my computer's resources and it is true that it is not a hardware problem.
By the way as I mentioned before I replaced my 40-pin IDE cable for the Drive with a 80-Pin one (The HD is running in UDMA5 mode) and I installed the Intel's Application Accelerator but all these didn't help. until I formatted the drive...
