Hi

I doing some update on a sql session. I noticed it taking too much time and killed it from Enterprise Manager. However the update continues and session marked for killed, the status of the session shown in OEM is Killed. the locks on the object still exists. Currently the only way i am ending that session is by restarting the database!! is there any better ways to kill the session and release all the locks.

regards,
Sudhi

Sorry, Sudhi, but when you "KILL" sessions in Oracle you are actually just "mortally wounding" them...they can "hang around" virtually forever. In my opinion, this is absolutely an Oracle bug until someone proves otherwise.

I have found that you can expedite the death of the session if, from the session you killed, you attempt to issue another command. This causes the session to acknowledge that you have killed it and it finally dies. The extenuating problem here is that if it is in the middle of still executing the UPDATE, you cannot issue another command until it finishes the previous command.

There have also been occasions that killing the o/s process can also "hurry" along the death of the session.
