XP Pro SP1
System has been absolutely fine until today:

System starts up - Mouse (usb but adapter to PS2) working
Ctrl-Alt-Del at logon freezes both mouse and keyboard

What did I try?
Everything plugged in
Alternate keyboard has same issue
Safe Mode - no good
Debugging Mode - no good
Last Known Good Config - no good

could access PC remotely - so checked out some things :
Device Manager showed Keyboard - yellow ! - with Russian or Cyrillic lettering
Deleted KB - restarted.... no effect (while using remote access - Windows finds and wants to load new hardware and finds driver for cryllic PS2 keyboard ?!)
Removed KB *and* mouse - no effect (and same result as above)
Ran SFC - no effect
Copied over keyboard drivers from another XP machine - no good.
The only new software install since last boot was Ewido security scanner - hadn't even run it fully, but uninstalled and selected restore point from before its installation - no result.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in Advance

Can you get rid of the PS/2 adapter and go straight to USB?

oh yeah.....
I also ran a battery of worm/trojan/virus stuff - Norton AV, Spybot, Ad Aware, Ewido, Webroot SpySweeper, Stinger - all with no results
:-(

I'll try the usb (mouse) direct - also need to check the BIOS (its probably the one thing I didn't do)
Appreciate your quick response "bc" - Now I'm home (the PC is my at work machine) and I won't be back until Monday. I'll post the next set of frustrations/results as they happen!

Resolved -

Thanks again, bk -

I went into the office today - as I knew I couldn't face the dilemma clearly on a Monday morning.

Switched the mouse to usb direct - now the mouse worked but the keyboard still didn't. I could still access remotely - removed keyboard (again) attempted to install it 'cold' (no help from Windows) and it wanted a strange inf file $ncbs$.inf or something like that. I looked through several log files - thinking perhaps it was a recent update that had screwed things up - and finally checked the keyboard.inf file --- the strange cyrillic keyboard identifications were there, at the bottom of the file..... USB/VID...... I had previously replaced i8042/kbdclass/keyboard.drv and keyboard.sys - replaced all again and keyboard.inf from an identical machine.

Its happy now - and so am I
