I have a PIII PC that boots up with a BIOS error - cannot find keyboard... and goes no further. I have tried several other keyboards which work on other machines but to no avail. I have not changed the setup for several months and before yesterday it seemed to be working well.

I didnt think anything of it, but every now and again when typing it would go very slow and if you keyed too fast it would just beep at you, after while it would be fine again?? I just put it down to a processor blockage.

Any help would be great.

is it usb or ps2? try unplugging it and cleaning out the connectors with "canned air" check for bent pins etc.

a keyboard should not cause a processor blockage unless you have a 0.01 Mhz machine :)

It is a PS2 keyboard. I have cleaned the connectors, ensuring the pings weren't bent and the plug is inserted fully.

After examining the pc again the lights on the key board light up on booting so there must be power, it is almost as if the pc cannot commmunicate with the keyboard though.

While I was tring different things, on a few occasions the PC wouldn't turn off until I removed the keyboard.

Some one mentioned that there is a keyboard fuse that commonly blows but I couldn't find one on my motherboard.

Any other ideas?

It could be the keyboard controller is shot....
If you have usb ports available you could try a usb keyboard and see if it will work.

Now if you do very little typing you could go to a software driven on screen keyboard and just click the letters with your mouse. Or better yet get a touch screen, well maybe not that would probably cost more than a new MB.
