I now have an XP computer and prefer to use Classic start menu.
In Win95 it was easy to keep "programs" menu under control by right clicking start\open\programs. For example if a program installed where you had to go through two directories popping out before you got to the program, the program.exe could be pulled out to show in the programs and the directories killed.
But now that I have XP am having trouble.
1) I want all programs alphabetical on the screen for ease of finding. I set them that way and later they are not.
2)Many programs install identical shortcuts in widely separated places in "programs". Sometimes if I kill the extra one it kills both.
3) When I click start\open\programs the box that opens has only about half the entries I get if I only click start\programs. That keeps me from making some repairs.
