I asked this question several days ago and didn't get much of a response, so trying one more time.

We have several hundred pc's in our domain. Recently, 10 to 20 pc's a day are losing their network connections. Once the user re-boots, it's fine for a day or two and then they lose the connection again. In the event viewer under the application log I get this:
Source: Userenv
Type:Error
Event ID: 1000
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722)

It seems the error (loss of network connection) comes right after Windows Auto update has ran.

So we tried installing SP3 and disabling Auto update. That did not solve problem. And updating the driver on the NIC card. Also tried re-walking a pc (ghostwalker) to change the SID. Still it did not solve problem.

We use DHCP IP's (these are the one's losing the connection) and since I'm in Hawaii, we support outer islands which run Static IP's (these one's have never had this problem).

Any suggestions?

This problem is on different models of Micron's and Dells.

Thanks

What is the lease on the DHCP addresses? You may have the lease setup for 2 or 3 days which is timing out.

I'm not an expert on DHCP servers but I believe clients are supposed to attempt to get a new lease before it runs out. Your server may be setup to not allow a new lease unless the client reboots.

Go to this web site:

If you scroll down to nearly the bottom of the page you will find the answers to your particular problem.
Make sure you are looking at your exact error code specifications.

The DHCP lease is ok. I'll try the info on the link.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if it works.

Ran into this many times... Your DNS doesn't seem to be functioning.

Check your DNS on the server and check to see if these particular addresses are in the list.

Run ipconfig /all in one of these workstations and check the dns servers that are being leased out. your server should be first in the list. ~ Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Henry Ford~
