I continually receive an error message that reads:

kbd.exe has experienced an error and will close.
Appver: 1.0.2.0 ModName: cfg.dll ModVer: 1.0.2.0
Offset: 000036a1

Does anyone know what this is and is there some way to correct it?

Have you checked for the latest updated XP drivers for your Keyboard?
