Windows Update wants to install KB967715 on almost every startup of my HP a1640n. Any way to stop this nonsense?

Try manually downloading it & installing in Safe Mode. I've seen references to certain anti-spyware tools causing this type of problem. Also see if there's any useful info in the windows update log

This update is supposed to correctly disable Autorun features through a registry update, while also updating the shell32.dll file. A Google search returns several threads with people suffering the same issue as you. There seems to be a problem with this update that is causing it to want to continuously be installed. Try the solution offered in the following link to manually set and configure what this update is intended to do.

I could kick myself! After doing my weekly "delete temporary intenet files" the problem went away. Duh. I am always hesitant to hack the registry, so my procrastination paid off, albeit in doofus fashion. Thanks for the detailed responses anyway!

Thanks, Smah. Safe mode ultimately did the trick. The deletion of temp internet files was only a temporary fix ... it came back. DL the update from the MS site and then install it in safe mode is the ticket!

I saw and instance of something similar last weekend. A couple of updates errored out every time. The fix was (and I don't know which), a chkdsk and an update to the latest windows installer.

I saw the mention of the chkdsk on a Microsoft forum but just threw in the installer update because I was getting cranky with the PC.
