Just curious if anyone has used this as AV solution on E2k3. We are looking for a new workstation/fileserver/exchange protection package and was curious if anyone has used it.
Thanks for sharing,
All the best!

Personally, I never ever put any AV on my servers because of performance issues.
Since all workstations are supposed to be protected anyway, I let them handle it, although there is a scanning SMTP box in front of the Exchange Server handling AV and Spam.

And Kapersky is not know to be a good choice for Exchange anyway.
Toppers are Symantec and McAfee, but those are the 2 I will never let into my business!

Hi Marcs41,
thanks for the notes. I could not agree more on sym and mcafee...which is why I am looking into new solution.
Doesn't this put little too much faith in workstation AV?
If exchange box is exposed from internal workstation...hm
Just curious what do you run on workstations?
Nod32 seems to be getting good reviews....
Thanks a bunch,
All the best!

I use the Pro version of AGV (Grisoft).

The risk for a workstation is EXACTLY the same as the risk for a server. Signature have to be updated constantly or you will have a risk. If you don't trust the workstations, they should not be connected.

Thanks N0ktar and Marcs41,
I know this is an 'old topic' but with the trends always changing I apprechiate your input.
To share a bit more I have ran Symantech on e2k/2k3 and fileservers while workstations are on McAfee ent. 8.
As you can you tell mismatch of things imposed and leftover from pervious staff.I would like to have one suite for the shop if possible. Currently spam is being filtered out by 3rd party so there is barely any that comes down to our mailservers...so I am not too worried about getting a suite that includes spam protection but hey why not.
I have heard differnt comments from Nod32,Kaspersky, BitDeffender,CA while MacAfee and Syman are really running out of breath...not to mention their core solutins are based on 'exculsions' or very heavy signatures.
They all seem 'attractive'...so I value your thoughts more then some PR promo made by the creators.
Thanks again,
All the best!

No problem for asking again, it is a field that changes all the time of course, viruses and AV, cat and mice...

Protection is important, but so is performance and stability, that is why I use AVG. There are no 500 fancy settings no-one ever uses, hence there is a minimum payload and rarely any user interaction required, which reduces support calls.

I tried the server versions too, but there is no benefit as long as you make sure the workstation get updates without fault.
I know some swear by protecting servers, but I fing it a waste of resource and performance. If a virus get in a mailbox, it can only do harm when a client uses it.

But, I repeat, I do use a 3rd party SMTP filter on the firewall BEFORE mail enters the server, just like I do for spam.

Hi Marcs41,
Thanks again for the post. I will definetly give an AVG a chance. The more I deal with mail the more I hate having AV loaded on the server...either backup or hung process eating up resources slowing everything down (Symantech). We use Postini for spam and viruses so our mail servers are really not exposed to public. However, i would like in-house fail-over protection...perhaps barracuda or gfi but this opens a whole another SMTP related topic.
Could not agree more on:
re are no 500 fancy settings no-one ever uses
I am getting tired of vendors trying to pack their apps just to boost their marketing....all it does it makes me sping in circles while trying to choose a product.
Thanks again for your time!
All the best!
