The reporter this morning showed videos of police using dogs to contain a riot. She said "the police used canines to quell the disturbance".

Have you seen the police use any other kind of canines? Like wolves, foxes or coyotes?

OK, I'm being pedantic, but aren't wolves lupine?

I do agree it's an odd choice of words though.

Lupine is used to describe something that resembles a wolf. Wolves belong to the canidae family, along with other canines.

For non-US readers, policeman who specialize in using dogs are called K9 units. Their vehicles are emblazoned with the "word" K9.

Last month, I was reading an illustrated book with a 10 year old kid. He pointed at the picture of a german shepherd and said: "that's a K9".

My suspicion is that this kid will be spelling dog as K9.

Dimandja - interesting. UK readers will know K9 as the robot dog from Dr Who.

Not just UK readers - Dr Who has lots of fans here in the States, too.

Of course, there's no telling how long we in the US will have to wait to see the new Dr. Who series currently in production......

As will many US readers... although I had completely forgotten that tid-bit of information.
I was at a wedding this past Spring in the US, of a couple both from the UK. They brought me a bag of Jelly Babies... Tom Baker was my favorite.

Oh, no. We're not going there. I learned a long time ago that there are things one should not discuss in polite company for fear of passions getting in the way of reasonable behavior. The list of topics includes:[ul][li]politics[/li][li]religion[/li][li]the various incarnations of Dr. Who[/li][/ul]

Quite right too!

Sorry, I misread Thadeus' post - I thought he meant Tom Baker was his favourite jelly baby. Seriously, I agree with Risie that William Hartnell takes some beating.

Politics and religion... I'd be happy to avoid those if people would just be content to discuss philosophy instead. :-D

All dogs are canines. So are wolves (and coyotes and others). Lupines (wolves) are actually a subgroup of canines.

Excellent example of this is the old RoadRunner cartoon (for the old ones, youngsters may not remember it as it's not violent enough to be shown on TV anymore) where the wolf has the name of Canis W. Lupus (with W standing for Wolf of course) even though he is often referred to as Eatus Allius (eats all...) and other pseudo-Latin names as well.

No. There is no subgoup called lupines.

Lupine is a characteristic of or resembling a wolf. A quick check of any dictionary will reveal this.
