dear all,

I connected my two home PCs yesterday, and although quite painless I have never administered a network before. By default, probably, the internet works, as does my mail client.

However, I have no idea how to share documents over the network. Although I seem to be able to do it one way (browse files on the Win ME PC), my other PC is Win 2000 Professional and I think I need to give "permission" to the other PC before i can browse on that one.
Strangely enough, I'm allowed printer sharing, but not access to either of the hard drives.

What do I do? And what is all this about creating a "new" drive for possible file-sharing?

Any tips or directions or idiot guides most welcome!

many thanks, neil

Neil,

By default, printers will allow printing by the everyone group - i.e. including people not know by the 2000 domain. In 2000, create a folder. Then right click it and choose sharing. To allow the ME box to see it set the permissions as EVERYONE gets full control.

Then it'll be able to see the share across the netowrk. I wouldn't do it that way myself as it also means ANYONE can see that share when you are on the Net.

If you really want to know Win2000 well enough and are willing to read, I recommend the Dummies series (bright yellow covers) - a little patronising and slightly jokey but a good read if you are a sad tekkie like me :)
