Hello, i used to run Redhat9, i switched to windows almost a year ago, all windows ever did was give me headaches
So then i went to the redhat site to discover they quit making the redhat distro as i knew it and switched to a fedora community project, enterprise 1, 2, 3; they also said they are stopping the redhat errata updates saying they are starting this fedora community base in hopes it could be bigger than redhat linux ever was in terms of community participation
so, my question is,
'are they starting a new up2date system based on community participation and bug fixes from it'
i hope i'm being clear an not sounding whacked i've been up a while

another question for those who use or "used" fedora is it cleaner then redhat8.0 , redhat9 and the anaconda installer just wondering if its been improved or they took some of the features away!

Let not your heart be troubled. Fedora uses an update program called "yum". If you are used to the update alert icons in your tray, they will still work.

I migrated all my RedHat 9.0 servers to Fedora. The first two were very easy, one was my firewall (which was brand new) the second was my development server and VMware workstation for my Windows distros. This all went very smooth without any problems. The firewall was a new install so that was easy, the second was an upgrade in place --- again no problems.

The third server was a bit more complicated since it provides:

DNS
Proxy
Web
File server
Print Server
DHCP server
Time server
Samba

I think you get the picture....

My dilemma was I could not afford to have the server down for any length of time. So, I wandered through the Fedora newsgroups and the Fedora news webseite . There I found some articles on how to upgrade my server in place while it was still running. Once it was upgraded to Fedora, I was able to just reboot and Voila!!!!....

As far as updates are concerned --- they work very well. As it was pointed out you can either use up2date (pointing at the Fedora site) or yum (I run it as a cron for my firewall), or alternatively you can use apt-get (ported from Debian) , which is very fast.

I am providing you with links to Fedora that I find are very useful:

Upgrading from Redhat 8/9 to Fedora Core 1
NOTE: When upgrading, make sure you have enough space in /var/cache. I created a symbolic link for yum onto a larger drive.
