I am taking crystal reports home for a test drive.

I have been using the build in QuickReports in Delphi for years, no headaches etc. but now I want my (database) reports in PDF so they can be uploaded for history purpose.

Anyone has experience in this combination?
1) What are the road blocks ahead
2) What about installation isues
3) Case stories, anecdotes ?

I've been using Crystal for years, both from within Delphi and separately. It's very powerful and you'll be able to do things within it that you can't do in QuickReports.

However, there are a couple drawbacks:
- When a new version of Crystal or Delphi is released, there's frequently a delay of several months before a new version of the Crystal VCL component is available.

- There's not a lot of support available for using the Crystal VCL component or other Crystal components with Delphi.

If PDF support is the only reason you're switching, there may be other, easier to use options available.

A computer only does what you actually told it to do - not what you thought you told it to do.

I have had good success with Rave reports (bundled with Delphi version 7). It supports PDF format.

It has the added advantage of allowing reports to be generated entirely from code. No templates necessary. But of course, you can use templates if you want to.

Currently I am using Delphi 6 together with Quickreports. I received a copy of Crystal Reports to evaluate. Succeeded to put some ActiveX controls, but the VCL components were on the other disk. The help was not very encouraging so I looked on the net and found a trial version of Quick Report exporter from Gnostice. I found it that good that I ordered Gnostice eDocEngine VCL ReportExport. With the trial version I just put a component onto my baseQuickRepForm and without any programing, I was able to save in PDF, excel or text file (real cool) [shadeshappy]

So I think that closes my Crystal Reports adventure
