I am trying to install 2 additional hardrives to a Dell Server running W2k server and am having a heck of a time. There is the original hardrive which I don't know the brand, but it is less than a year old server if that tells you anything, a Samsung cdrw and the 2 hardrves I am trying to install are Maxtor. I can only get it to recognize one of the new hardrives and I am pretty sure it is a jumper setting issue. Can anyone tell me how I should proceed with this i.e. jumper setting for each device and where on the ide cable should they go?
Thanks in advance for the advice :)

Try to put your devices to "cable select".
If that not works (it does not sometimes), then you have to put one device as a master and one device as a slave pr IDE-cable.

It is difficult to give any specific instructions on how to put the jumpers right, cause different manufacturers have different ways to organize those little pins.

Try visiting the vendors website (
TIP: CD/DVD/CDRW-units usually comes with the jumpers set to slave as default.

PREFERABLY Master/Slave, Cable Select is slower, and if you even turn around the cable, you have troubles.

Put the 2 disks as Master on each Controller, and a CD or DVD as Slave.

If you don't know how your current one is set, it should show up on the POST screen while booting (you can press Pause to freeze the screen.
Or, in your BIOS, do a autodetect disk, but cancel out. If it does not show up as master, it isn't.
Switch the jumpers to test, you won't break anything.

If I set the 2 new ones as master then what about the original one with the op system on it? The 2 new ones are for addition al storage.

nono, just one of them as MAster on the seconf controller, the other as slave on the first controller, assuming you keep the original disk in, as master.

Does the slot on the cable matter, or is that only when you use cable select?

does not matter for Master/Slave
