Jsp environment

Hi I am a totally new at the jsp stuff,I am using a unix envronment for writting the .jsp application ,Please can you tell me how i can go about this environment .
I have tomcat installed on my desktop ,do i need to put in the server address in it or it just needs to know where my java files are.
If everything is installed on the remote server and i am using logging on to that server how do i execute my .jsp
