I recently un-installed j2re1.3.1_02 in my WinXP Home system, and then installed j2re1.4.2. Now, both versions of the Java Plug In appear in my Control Panel...

I've gone through the Registry and deleted all references to 1.3.1_02, and this version is gone from Add/Remove Programs, but the active icon (not a shortcut) refuses to go away. What have I missed?

The uninstall just might not be complete. There probably is a .cpl file out there with a name that referes to java or j2re*. You could do a search for it and then delete it (or rename it to be safe.)

Yup, that was it! Plugincpl131_02.cpl was still in the \System32 directory. I renamed it, and it went away.

Funny, there's not a similar .cpl for j2re1.4.2, but that icon is still in the Control Panel. Any idea what the replacement might be?

Thanks for the assist... I was about out of hair!

Ok, I found the replacement - jpicpl32.cpl.

[chuckle] Not very intuitive... :o)
