Flash 4 will allow you to set any bitmap (jpegs become bitmaps when imported into Flash 4) color for transparency. This technique is covered in the Flash 4 users manual. The technique works well but you must first convert the jpeg into a symbol. So you acutally set the transparent color range on the symbol and the actual jpeg stays the same as when imported. Once you do it its easy and works well.
If the background of the photo is one color this can be done easily. First, you must break apart the image, then click on the lasso tool. Down below the toolbar on the left will be a choice for the "magic wand" tool, as well as a properties box for this tool. Based on the settings you choose, you can select a given color in the image, and it will select that color and similar colors in contact with it. Then you can delete these pixels. If the background is solid, this works well. Once you are done, just regroup the remaining pixels. Good luck.
