I'm confused and am not sure what happened here.
I had three Xp Pro systems that were set up as workgroup systems and needed to join a domain. At the same time, their login names needed to be changed to match the naming conventions of the domain: for example, they were logging in to their machine as John Smith, but the NT domain requires jsmith. Also, they had no passwords.
So.. I renamed John Smith to jsmith, added the password, and joined the domain. I then wanted to copy the old user profile to the new domain login, but found that jsmith no longer had administrative power, even if I log into this computer rather than the domain. So because jsmith is not the administrator (though John Smith obviously was or I wouldn't have been able to join the domain), I can't copy jsmith/workgroup to jsmith/domain.
I am confused - what happened? Is there any way to fix this short of buying password cracking software?
