Heres some more numbers used by a local computer tech school to recruit students. Let me quote "an Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) 2000 study states that over 850,000 I.T. jobs are going unfilled."

Ok now that was in 2000, So those numbers could have changed. But since they use the numbers, than so am I.

850,000 Job openings / 50 States in the US = an average of 17,000 IT job openings per state.

I live in Harrisburg, PA. The capital of PA. This area is loaded with State and federal government employment.

On Wednesday, I called a state agency to see if they had any IT openings and they did not.

Also I searched our main newpaper classified section for any IT job openings, there are 2 ads for IT job openings.

Now I did not look eveywhere where there could be ads, but with so many so-called IT Job openings it should not be that difficult to find the jobs - right?

If they had written 100 jobs are going unfilled, nobody would attend their school.

When I see these numbers they are mainly looking for highly specialized craft, like engineers, programmers, managers, scientists etc.
Similarly is the demand for engineers etc.

Not somebody who just rolled out of a certification course. Steven van Els

Those adds are used to grab someones attention. And they do. They mislead one into thinking that if someone takes their course that they can land a 50K/year job when the yare finished. When in truth it is difficult enough for those who are Certified with experience to land good jobs. So what chance does a "fresh" certified low experienced tech have? Not a whole lot. With the job market the way it is now it is hard for ANY one to get a job. These companies that offer certification are out for profit only. Many dont offer any job assistance (Some do). And while we're on the topic, how about CompTIA's bandying about "unfilled job openings" like that? I'd love to know how they derive those numbers, because if we thought they were a bit high during the height of the dot-com boom, they're absolutely out in space now. The sad part is that I suspect CompTIA is putting those numbers out to encourage A+/i-Net+/Project+/etc test-takers, and the reality is that those numbers are STILL being used in DC to help our elected representatives keep H1B numbers high.

There are over 5000 jobs posted on Monster.com (on 6/3/2002). I cannot tell you how many more than 5000, since that is where they stop counting.

There are 272 postings just for the state of Missouri.

I am sure hotjobs and other sites have a simular number.

The jobs are out there, but while there is a market for IS people, there is a satuartion of IS people looking for jobs. To this end it seems that there are fewer openings. Sure there are a lot fewer now (in June of 2002) then there were in January of 2000... but hey, IS has changed since 2000. CJ
