I am running XP Pro SP1 with the latest JRE installed. I have IE 6 and Netscape 7.1 installed. In either browser, if I go to a web page with Java Scripts on the page, the scripts run perfectly. If I click on a javascript link, however, nothing happens. I will check my firewall (Symantec Client Firewall v5.1) when I get home, but I do not suspect it to be the cause of the problem. Further evidence that the JRE is working is that the console for SAV for Palm requires the JRE and does work.

I'm at a loss, as this used to work. I don't know when it stopped working. I have been adding applications to the system ever since I installed XP about 2 weeks ago (recent dual-boot upgrade from Win98). Everything else work very well. If you belong to the Exchange 5.5 forum, you will probably have seen some of my posts in reply to other peoples issues, and know that I'm pretty knowledgeable. I have already run the SCF /scannow (or is that sfc?), and assume all is OK, though I ran it overnight.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

The bcastner "70% of the time or better" fix:

open a notepad session, and copy/paste the below as ie_fix.cmd:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file.
Close all IE sessions, and then double-click ie_fix.cmd, answer any prompts that may appear.

Retest.

bcastner,

You da man! Do you care to share how you found this?

My problem is now solved. However, I did get one error. It read: LoadLibrary ("MSJava.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found. I assume that this is due to the fact that I dont have the Microsoft Virtual Machine installed.

Many thanks,
Bob

That is the reason for the error.

As to an explanation of how I found it: I saw repeated issues with file associations, particularly under IE. MS published a KB article:
And it seemed too involved. Hence, I did a shorthand version, my (for Sherlock Holmes fans) 70% solution above.
There is nothing fancier than that, other than it did occure to me that file associations and some internals were regularly being corrupted, and a re-registration of the critical DLLs would fix the issue without doing anything dramatic.

Then again, maybe I spoke too soon. It seems that javascript will run when I first open IE, but then stops working. Netscape is now working as it should, though. I checked out the link you posted and examined the registry. Everything is OK there. Maybe I'll restart XP and see what happens.

I'm having a very similar problem.

On XPpro machines. Using either Netscape or IE6, I cannot successfully navigate websites that employ javascript buttons. When I click a javascript button, nothing happens. I hear a click from my speakers, as I would when clicking a button on a webpage normally, but nothing happens. I just get stranded on that page.

I know that the website is on-line b/c i can access it from other computers, and I can even get to the pages i need on the malfunctioning computers if i type in the direct URL. I can't do that all the time though.

I did try bcastner's fix, to no avail.

Browsers on these computers handle other pages A-ok. At one time, the offending computers did not malfunction in this way. I can't trace the problem back to any particular upgrade, etc.

Microsoft is no help.
Anyone else got any ideas?

thx,
Rob

Do you have any way, shape or form of popup blocker active?

It's not a pop-up blocker, but Adaware6, by Lavasoft, is installed on one of the problem comptuers.

I don't think that would be the cause. I'm pretty sure this became a problem before i installed it.
