Japanese in CF?

I am quickly getting the picture that some of the programs I like to use don't support unicode. More specifically MySQL and Coldfusion. It turns out that soon after I launch my company's website in June I will have to deliver a Japanese version as well. I need to read and write Japanese to a database (probably SQL).

Has anyone run into this before and possibly found a workaround? I've been a loyal CF user for the past year and get depressed with thoughts of turning to ASP.

On a sidenote, after torturing various members of the sales staff at Allaire I've got vague guarantee's that version 5 (due out in a few months) will support unicode. Obviously I am faced with using or not using Coldfusion right now so someone from their technical staff should be calling today. I'll post the verdict when I get it. Andrew

The verdict is in and unicode will not be supported in version 5. It'll be included in the Neo release at the end of this year. Workarounds, anyone? Andrew

Yes, this unicode issue is crap. I suggest purchasing the Japanese version of Cold Fusion. It supports all japanese characters. You can still share a lot of your code as well. ASP is a bad way to go IMHO. It runs great, but the language is sooo cludgy. Maybe JSP or PHP. I've even written wrappers that call a PHP or ASP file in Cold Fusion. Either way, this is one major limitation of CF that is really quite stupid.

How dominant are double-byte characters in Japanese writing? Of course writing single byte Japanese characters to a database is no problem. I've also been working on getting a translation company lined up for the project but they don't want to give any useful information unless I'm paying them for consulting.

Anyone know any useful links to sites that address these types of multilingual issues? Know if you can get away with translating without using double-byte characters? Andrew
