I run the Firefox browser.

Looking at my installed programs I see:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5, at 71.7 Mb and Updates 2 thru 11, all taking about 120Mb apiece.

Also:
Java(TM) 6 Update 2(111 Mb) and
Java(TM)J2SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 (134 Mb).

Question is do I need all these installed or are the updates cumulative? ie - can I uninstall everything except the stuff referring to Java 6 ?

Thanks

Over the past few years since the demise of Microsoft's own Java machine, Sun Java has been installed on my machines. I have only ever retained the latest update, uninstalling all the updated 100+MB prior installs including the original download. Whether that is the correct thing to do or not I can't say, what I can say is it has never caused me any problems across several machines.

What's the worse thing that might happen, you might have to download Java from Sun once more?

General rule, on the J2Runtime, uninstall the old before install of the new...

basically they all point to one install, and if you deinstall the oldest it will deinstall the latest...

suggestion: deinstall ALL, then install the latest (Version 6 Update 2)...

Is that true Ben? Can't say I've noticed older entries uninstalling the later entries when they are both listed in Add or Remove. Java is always saying I have the latest version installed and I never uninstall the older before updating to the later version.

Oops, Linney, you're right... I retract the statement, I got it mixed up...

but none the less, it is better to deinstall the old and then install the newer version...
