ITS over WAN link????

Has anybody been involved in setting up ITS over a WAN?

I am looking into this and need some help.

What is best?

1. Having the WGate & AGate sitting on one side connecting through the WAN link to the R3 server?

or

Having the WGate on one side connecting to the AGate over the WAN, the AGate is sitting on the LAN with the R3 server.
